Today the news guy said, some serial robbers head into the suburbs & I though he said cereal robbers head into the suburbs, and I laughed for way longer than I should have. Oskar didn’t seem to find it amusing.

I'm still here, and doing OK. We got our first snow today and even though we are lucky to have our first snow that sticks this late in the year, I hate it with a passion.

It wasn't one of those nice fluffy snows, it was freezing rain first so that our vehicles (no garage) ended up frozen shut. We broke the one pitiful ice scraper we could find. Nothing beats being out in freezing sleet trying to chip into your car with half an ice scraper & a spatula.
Once I got going, I went to Meijer to get two ice scrapers. I got sturdy, fancy ones that cost almost $20 each. When I came home my husband & I couldn't figure out how to work them.

Winter wonderland? Don't be fooled, snow mostly sucks ;)

I'm actually doing better than OK, I'm doing better than I have in a while. I make sure I get dressed in jeans or cargos everyday, I used to always wear pajama, sweat pants type stuff all the time when I was more depressed. But, since JD has my van all day while he is working & I'm dedicating today to blogging and cleaning, here's a little peek at the outfit I've been wearing since I got back from running my errands.

Cozy & Comfortable

I have a little more on my plate with my 3 blogs than I can handle right now, but I'm not focusing too much on blogging, so I can focus on acutally getting out of the house and living life. I'll probably be around more often after my trip to the ACK Eukanuba dog show and the holidays are over.

Living with bi-polar type II I feel like I have an uneven view of life. A cynic, my glass has always been half empty. I don't mean for it to be, but it always has been.
At 44 years old, I'm trying to figure out how to be happy. It's taken me a lot of years, and a lot of pain to realize that this disease was ruining my life by putting huge limits on the things I allow myself to do.

The world is scary & my place is safe. But it's also getting smaller with each passing day becoming a prison. I literally sit in front of a window and a computer screen & watch the world go by, feeling bad because I haven't laughed in forever. Haven't enjoyed anthing I've done for the last several days. Thoughts of feeling hopeless & worthless swirling in my head with no off switch.

I'm scared, but I want to break free of my walls, start talking nicely to myself, know that I am good enough & that I do have value.

I know that my little blog has been neglected, and I don't know what role it will have in my new & improving future, but I wanted to share what I was feeling with my friends. Friends who have said countless prayers for me & have always lifted my spirits when I'm at my lowest.

I will always have bad days, but now I choose to believe that there will be more happy days right around the corner. I'm going to learn how to be alive & joyful, even if I have to drag my bi-polar kicking & screaming behind me.

Project 365 - Week 44

Hello P365 friends. Sorry I've been out of the game for so long. My bi-polar has gotten worse over the last several weeks and now I'm in a partial day hospital program to learn how to deal with things better. It's hard, but I'm learning things that will hopefully be helpful for a long time.

This is the image that I came up with to use as my "mantra" of sorts. I printed them out & put them where I will see them when I'm struggling.

I haven't been taking many pictures, but I put together a sort of catch up post with some from the past weeks.

Jack's Homecoming

Hello friends, if there are still any of you out there! Sorry I've been gone so long. I took some time off to deal with issues related to my bi-polar brain.

I've missed all of my blogging buddies & I wanted to get back to show you pics of Jack, my youngest, and his girlfriend Alexis on their way to the homecoming dance.

Here they are trying to figure out how to put on Jack's boutonniere.

It's a little harder without a suit jacket to pin it on, but Jack wasn't going to homecoming in anything less than his own unique style. It's kind of a mix between Johnny Depp & Russell Brand but you can't really tell that from this pic ;)

They had a great time at the dance & I'm a little sad for another milestone that we have passed on the way to his adulthood.

John David is still working and trying to figure out what he wants to do with his life, but at 19 I figure that's just fine, since he's doing well at his job.

I may still be hit or miss here for a while while I try to figure out the dark clouds in my head, but I do have a couple of fun things coming up.

Depression Hurts

If you're a reader of Screaming Mimi you probably know that I suffer from Bi-polar disorder type II. If you're interested in reading about bipolar type II you can see my old post here.

There's a Cymbalta commercial that comes on TV and the theme is Depression Hurts. I hate seeing that commercial.

Being trapped in your own head, that is constantly telling you how worthless you are and how much you can't do gets tiring. Fast.

Some days it takes me to the point where I'm unable to function to do even the smallest things like making dinner for my family or unloading the dishwasher.

The chemicals in my brain are different from the norm, it takes me longer to get motivated to do things, if I can do them at all. Leaving the house for any social interaction is hard and actually impossible at times. When taking Oskar for a walk is too daunting for me, I know that I'm having a rough patch. Hello, rough patch.

I got up this morning and went to see my mom. I didn't do any of my other errands, but I did the most important one and enjoyed spending some time with her, seeing some of the things that my grandmother had saved and reading a letter from my mom's grandpa.

As always I'm writing this (somewhat disjointed) post in an ongoing effort to help people understand bipolar, depression, & mania. We're not crazy, we're not lazy, we're hurting and if we're lucky we know that this episode will pass, hopefully sooner rather than later.

BlogHer Just Keeps Giving

Some of you may remember that before my trip to BlogPaws, I went to BlogHer in San Diego. Proctor & Gamble is a big sponsor of BlogHer & instead of giving out a lot of swag at the conference, they sent a box to bloggers who registered.

Well my box came today & let me say I was NOT disappointed. BlogHer is full of take home swag, in fact it's customary to bring a whole seperate suitcase just to transport all of your goodies home. Some pens from this company, re-usuable shopping bags, lunch coolers, nice things like that & some even nicer.

Well P&G just blew everyone out of the water. FedEx just delivered this box to my house.

Full sized, new products from lines we are all familiar with like Tide, Swiffer, Oil of Olay & more. Just look.

Now I was sponsored by the pet care division of Proctor & Gamble to go to BlogHer, but that's not why I received this box. Every blogger who registered got a box like this one. I'm off to sort through all of this fun new stuff & hope I can get a sponsor again next year for BlogHer!

BlogPaws - The Day Before

I flew into the BlogPaws conference on Wednesday, a full day before the conference began so I could do some sightseeing. To read about my trip into DC click over to Pet Blogs United.

Once in the city I headed to the National Museum of American History. I only got a few shots, because my camera batteries died before I was even half way through. Of course I packed more batteries, but of course I left them in my hotel room!

At the museum I had a quick lunch & then headed to see all of the exhibits. My pictures aren't great, but Julia Childs kitchen was so perfect & organized & detailed exactly the way she left it. I remember growing up and watching her cook from that kitchen on many of her shows.

Here's a Dumbo Ride from a Disney Theme park. I can't remember if it was Disney World or Disney Land.

Here's the first Kermit the Frog muppet from the Sam & Friends Show. We all know it morphed into Sesame Street! I was 2 in 1969 when it started, so I watched it my whole childhood & loved re-watching with my kids.

These were the latest things they had in in the popular entertainment section, Eddie Van Halen's guitar from the 1984 record, one of Tony Hawk's skateboards & that simple copper color bathing suit that lit Farrah Fawcett on fire. Extra cool points if your dad or brother had that poster hanging up in your home!

Michael Jackson's glove & Edith & Archie Bunker's chairs are pictures that didn't turn out and by the time I got to my favorite part, the inaguration ballgowns of the first ladies, my camera was totally dead. Perfect blogger timing.....

John marked up the Schwan's catalog with stuff he'd like to get. I wonder if it's worth the money. I find myself not making too many meals for the family because unlike before gastroparesis when I used to love to cook, now I hate the whole process. That's guilt inducing.

The Sleep Number Bed people sent me a True Silver Blanket to review over on Pet Blogs United. The pure silver fibers naturally repel bacteria, dust and odors, making it a great blanket to use when pets share your bed with you.

I was planning on seeing the monuments on Friday night, but unfortunately I missed out on that as I had to fly home on Friday instead of Sunday.

A Time For Memories

Today at the funeral home visitation for my grandmother I had so many happy memories flashing through my head. Stories that spoke from picture boards, some stories I knew, some I had to ask about. Hearing stories from my mom & her 8 siblings about growing up with trips to the family farms, trouble they got into as 9 kids with no money under one roof. A story my mom shared with us about my grandma's passing that she told to me & my children to have and to remember.

When my grandma passed she had my grandpa and all 9 of her children surrounding her. I hope we are all so blessed as to have such a loving passing, and wish that I wasn't an only child, so that I had a large family to lean on when my turn comes to start letting the next generation pass.

The love and grace and closeness that my mom & her siblings share is a special thing that I think all of my cousins wish for. My parents generation only went so high as three children per family, and there are quite a few of us "onlies" in the group.

My mom's family is of a generation that you don't see much anymore and the legacy that they carry down from is quickly dying out. My grandma was a young wife & mother when she went to work in the factories while my grandpa was out fighting in a tank, on the front lines in Germany. They didn't have much and didn't expect much, but they all had each other.

We all marvelled that at the funeral home my grandmothers nails were painted. We had never seen that in our lives. She was always working in the dirt with her garden, or canning what they harvested from the garden. Baking rhubard pies from scratch & crocheting many things for her children, grandchildren & great grandchildren. Making the best home made fried chicken in the ancient cast iron that was ever present with her stove. Those hands were never still.

My mom commented how my grandma had such terrible gout in her fingers making things harder and painful for her to do, but today laying in her casket her hands were not swollen or painful. They were holding her rosary, with a faint touch of fancy nail polish, finally pain free. Amen.

Since I'm going to 3 blogging conferences in the next several weeks, BlogHer, BlogPaws & BarkWorld Expo, Chris took me out to buy me some new suitcases. I was sad that they didn't have yellow, but I do like the blue. There are 2 more little suitcases inside like little Russian stacking dolls.

Goodbye Is Not Forever

My grandma passed peacefully early this morning, with my grandpa and all 9 of her children surrounding her. At 44 I know that I'm so lucky to have had her with me for so long and lucky that she got to know my children for so many years.

I'll probably be on a little blogging break, but your prayers for my family are very appreciated.

I have to ask for prayers this week. My grandma has entered the hospital for the final time. All they can do now is make her comfortable. I ask for your prayers for a peaceful passing & for comfort in the hearts of my family.

One of our cats, Moe, sat & stared into the corner for about 15 minutes. She wasn't sleeping, nor was there a bug or anything else there to hold her interest. Mabe she was just amazed at how messy our house is!

I have been away from Project 365 for a few weeks due to sickness & vacation, but I'm thrilled to be back. So without further ado, here is my week un-retouched & un-filtered.

July 10 - July 16, 2011

Chris loves to hang his laundry outside on the line. I get a kick out of watching his t-shirts wave at me from the yard!

Monday

We had a new, desperately needed, mattress delivered today. Here are Chris & Oskar enjoying it!

We left on our camping trip in our motor home & Oskar took over the co-pilot seat! I let him because the captain's chair directly behind it is much more comfy.

Oskar in his Thundershirt. The Thundershirt is for dogs with anxiety problems. In Oskar's case it's loud noises like fireworks and thunder. Usually he would be cowering in the bathtub while fireworks are going on like they were Friday, but the Thundershirt works amazingly well and Oskar was able to relax for the duration. I highly recommend the Thundershirt for anybody with fearful dogs.

I've gone back onto Nutrisystem to hopefully help with my gastoparesis. I really like the NS program and have had success with it in the past. Here's a look at my food log for my first two days.

My baby, Jack Andrew, is 16 today. My Jack is funny, kind, loving, smart and totally his own person. He has a great sense of style, but I don't have a great picture to represent that.

He is so caring and loving that he makes my day everytime I am with him. He spends 50% of his time with his dad, so I miss him a lot of the time, but am always thrilled when he walks back through the door.

I wish that all of you could know him to know what a special person he truly is.

Every year I shed a few tears on my boys birthdays, happy tears that I have helped to create such amazing people.

Happy birthday, baby, I love you so very, very much.

44 Will Be My Best Year Ever!

I turned 44 yesterday. I am determined to make this year my best one ever.

I'm going to stay out of the hospital, find a diet that works better for my gastroparesis and try to enjoy life every day instead of worrying about things that may or may not even happen.

I hope to be a better wife to my husband and a better mother to my boys. Some people start a new outlook at New Years, but for me this birthday seems like a new starting point for me.

I think the fact that my neighbor was murdered at just 60 years old, just when he was opening a new chapter of his life (retirement), made me really realize that I have a responsibility to stop being a "sick person" and really start living my life.

Does anyone want to make a new start with me?

Well I made it out of the hospital late on Thursday, but a tragedy has taken me down the path of depression.

My next door neighbor was shot & killed, by his older brother, on July 3rd. This man & his wife have been so good to me, especially when I was a single mom struggling to make a go of it. His kindess and compassion came through in every conversation I ever had with him. He was a man of God and a man of goodness. This has shaken me to my core and is making me re-evaluate the way I live each day of my life.

Please keep his beloved wife Joan and their whole family in your prayers. I'll be back to posting more regularly when I clear some of the shock and pain out of my system. I know he is with our Heavenly Father, but his loss will be felt every single day by me and those that knew him.

The Doctors, Really?

There is a show on TV called The Doctors. Today their show is called, "The Hole Truth" where they will be discussing all of the holes in your body. I don't need that in my morning. If it's not a hole on my head I don't want to discuss it and I especially don't want to watch a TV show about it!

I'm afraid to even go past that channel when I'm looking for something to watch. The last time it was on I caught a show about nipple discharge. With my son. In a waiting room. As you can imagine, we were all squriming until I went up and asked them to change the channel. We happily settled on Sesame Street.

If anything is having discharge or if I have a problem with any of my "holes" I'll talk to my Dr. In private. The way God intended it.

Hi guys, I overheard my youngest boy Jack talking to a friend today & he said, "My mom is the shit, she's the coolest."

Now the language is not what I would prefer, but I love that that's what he thinks of me. He has told me that he is the only one of his friends who isn't always complaining about his parents.

It makes me feel awesome that my boys love me & know how much I love them. They are both really good boys. Neither has ever gotten into any trouble and at 19 & almost 16 that feels pretty good.

I appreciate your comments and prayers for my grandmother. She is still amazing the Dr's & was successfully taken off of the respirator yesterday. I guess miracles do happen when you believe.

Sorry I have been gone for so long. My gastroparesis acted up again and had me in the hospital twice, the first time for almost a week.

Since I've been home, my grandmother went into the hospital and today had a surgery she was not expected to survive due to congenital heart failure. I'm thrilled to announce that she made it through the surgery and is now in ICU. She's not out of the woods yet, but the first major hurdle has been cleared.

I'm thrilled to announce that I'm going to be going to BlogHer this August. Is anyone else going? I'd love to meet up with you while you're there if you are! Leave me a comment and let me know.

A Trip To Henry Ford Museum

Being from Michigan we get to take advantage of Henry Ford's vision of an amazing museum & property, The Henry Ford Museum Museum & Greenfield Village are full of amazing historical attractions like Albert Einstein's original Menlo Park Labratory, war buildings & a working farm.

On the inside of the museum are amazing pieces like this one. The chair the President Lincoln was sitting in when he was shot, along with an original playbill.

The Bus that Rosa Parks made her famous ride is there along with the Wright Brother's original plane.

This is the car (with a roof now) that President Kennedy was assisinated in. The US Presidents continued to use this car for almost 15 years after Kennedy was shot.

Chris always likes the trains best & I oblige him by trying to ooh & aah over them every time!

Dubbed America's Greatest History Attraction I think they might be right. If you're ever in South Eastern Michigan try to see Greenfield Village & Henry Ford Museum.

Chris & Oskar were hanging outside in the gorgeous chairs my dad made for us.

Monday:
My mom called me Monday morning & said her friend was getting rid of a leather couch a recliner. Our furniture was literally shredded, torn & held together with duct tape. We were thrilled to spend the day off picking up some decent furniture. John David & Chris are relaxing after wrestling furniture for hours in the heat.

Tuesday:
Oskar has a new favorite spot on a footstool that came with the furniture. It's perfect for watching out the window. You can see the remnants of our old couch by the curb. Bye-bye horrible, frat house, furniture!

Wednesday & Thursday, no pics.

Friday:
One of the few roses that has bloomed so far with all this rain. It's about a day past it's best. Sounds like me, lol!

Iams Loves Their Pets

I let you know that I was going to the Iams & Eukanuba Behind The Paw Influencer Summit a few days ago and I have to tell you that I had a wonderful time and met so many amazing people.

I think the first thing I have to address is the PETA video that is out there from 2002. PETA has pasted together some horrible footage from an outside facility that Proctor & Gamble, Iams parent company, used for a period of time for a small portion of their animal testing. This facility did testing on many animals from many different sources

Iams felt that the feedback they were getting about their animals at this facility, was not very good. What they decided to do was hire a person themselves to oversee the care of their animals at this lab. Iams wanted to ensure that their animals got proper care, stimulation and were being treated well. The person that Iams ended up hiring was an undercover PETA operative, who took inflammatory video, mostly of dogs that were not Iams animals and swung the power of PETA against "big corporate America" for sympathy and to raise money for their cause.

At the end of this PETA video it asks for you to contribute to Fifi, an IAMS pet. What PETA does not tell you is that Fifi was removed from the facility and adopted out to a loving family through the Iams adoption program. Any money given to PETA for "Fifi" is not being used to help her.

I met and spent almost 3 days with Proctor & Gambles Iams/Eukanuba team including Jason Taylor, who is in charge of external relations. What I want you to know more than anything is that the entire Iams family is deeply hurt by the lies that have been spread about them. I met everyone from the president of Iams Eukanuba North America to the employees that work at the production plant and these people love animals as much as I do.

Did Iams pay for me to Dayton to convince me that the PETA accusations are untrue? In part, yes they did. Were they successful in doing so? Absolutely. Do I want a fight with PETA on my little corner of blogland? Absolutely not, but what I do want is my friends to know are my honest opinions.

Iams research & development dogs are happy, exceptionally well treated, well trained dogs who are bought from reputable breeders, are AKC registered and adopted out to loving families at the end of their time with Iams.

I've got a lot more to tell you about my trip & I will in the coming days, mostly on Oskar's Blog. This will be the only post in which I address the PETA video. I welcome your comments, but if their not respectful then they will be deleted.

My Husband Loves Me So Much!

Hi friends, my computer still has me locked out of my Blogger account! I’m so sorry I haven’t visited anyone in so long, between the computer trouble & the trip I just took to Dayton with Iams & Eukanuba I can’t get caught up, but I did want to share a quick post about how amazing my husband is.

He worked while I was away being wined and dined and then had to pick me up at midnight last night at Detroit Metro Airport about an hour away from here. Instead of complaining about having to get me, he was thrilled and proud that I was able to overcome my anxiety, gastroparesis & broken ankle and go by myself.

He was waiting for me in baggage claim and when I got to the van he had brought my pillow, a quilt, a Hostess cherry pie, a Diet Pepsi. I am so lucky & blessed.

I’m going to try and resolve this issue so I can visit you all & tell you more about my trip soon!

Locked Out & Leaving!

While Blogger seems to be mostly fixed, I can't log onto this blog from my house! It's been several days now & I can only access this from computers outside my house!

I'm leaving early tomorrow morning for my pet conference with Proctor & Gamble in Dayton. I'm not a flyer & I have to fly alone, so I'm terrified. Prayers & well wishes are appreciated!

I got up early & loved every minute of the royal wedding today. It was a modern fairy tale that really brightened my day. I avoided watching all of the hype leading up to the wedding, so that I wouldn't be sick of it and William & Catherine did not dissapoint me!

I broke my ankle on Easter Sunday falling down the stairs at my grandmother's house. I actually missed the bottom step and came down on my ankle. When I fell, I hit the wall with my head and a bowl that was hanging there landed square on my head. I wish I could have seen myself sitting on the ground with a bowl on my head. Once they knew I was OK, by teen boys got quite a laugh out of the site of me. I'm in a walking bootie that is much better than a cast

I went and saw my friend and amazing artist, Diane from Good Morning Glory and she gave me some wise advice, tough love & hugs that I really needed today. I love you!

Proctor & Gamble is flying me to Dayton in a few weeks to attend the Behind The Paw Influencer Summit for Iams & Eukanuba dog food because of my blog Pet Blogs United. It will be a huge adventure for me to fly by myself and be gone for a couple of days, but I'm really looking forward to it.

Review: Coach Wooden, by Pat Williams

“Coach Wooden” by Pat Williams is an engaging look into a man whose life was shaped by 7 principles his father instilled in him. Although John Wooden lived his life around basketball, the book is enjoyable for even a non-sports fan. Many references are made of his coaching time at UCLA and the success with the Bruins but it does not feel like a “sports book”. It’s a book about a man who lived a life that inspired, and still inspires, others.

We learn that Coach was who he was because of his father and the way he was raised. He lived his life by a set of values which he did not waver from up until his dying day. The book is a lesson in how we all are called to make an impact, sometimes with unseen results. His father was not a man looked on by the world as someone with success. He worked hard and raised his family well. It was the seed, as summarized in 7 principles, that allowed his son, John Wooden, to make a huge impact on all he came in contact with.

There have been many books with Coach John Wooden as the central figure but this is the only one I have read. It’s short, with on 170 pages, but will leave a lasting impact on how I will continue on with the way I interact with my fellow man. I feel that I am now better prepared to make my life my masterpiece!

Windsor is the only point in Canada that is south of the US & I lived there for a couple of years after I married my first husband who was Canadian. This makes my boys both 1/2 Canadian, but I try not to hold it against them ;)

The boys got Chris a waffle maker for Christmas and he love making a big batch of waffles on the weekend to eat all week. This time I made him a topping with butter, brown sugar, granola & bananas. It rocked!

Calling All Cooks!

Some of you may know that I am also a pet blogger. My miniature schnauzer Oskar has his own blog.

And I have a blog for pet bloggers to come togther for support called Pet Blogs United.

I am working in conjunction with a group called Crossed Paws to make a series of cookbooks for both pets and humans. The cookbooks will be available on disc and will be sold to benefit pets in need with large medical or other bills.

I'm currently working on three editions. One for pet treats and then 2 for humans, one for soups & one for casseroles. I would love your support if you have any of those types of recipes that you could send me to include in these fund-raising cookbooks. Feel free to send more than one. If you send a recipe, please include a picture of the finished product, if you can, and your blog address. All recipes that appear in the cookbook will have a link to your blog included. Attending BlogPaws

I'm lucky enough to be going to a pet blogging conference called BlogPaws this August. It's a conference for pet bloggers and I'm being sponsored by a dog food company called Nature's Variety.

I've been looking for a place to get customized pens, and customized envelopes to hand out at the conference. After looking at several sites, I really like Amsterdam Printing.

If any of you has ever used them, I'd love to get your feedback! I'll let you know how my pens turn out.

Medical Assisting?

John David is considering going to school for medical assisting, but he concerned about having to wear scrubs. Well I found a great place for medical uniforms, that even he thinks are cool.

Once I started looking at the program, I thought that it might be something I'd be interested in doing, if I get turned down for SS disability. I like scrubs that are classic, but not too busy. Fashion scrubs are some that I found that are high quality and have great colors like chocolate and aquamarine that look great.

I've already done a lot of the work for medical assisting program when I did my medical coding program, so I wouldn't have to take things

Who knows what kind of path lies in our futures and whether or not it contains medical scrub sets can be expensive, but they have to be durable and well made.

Could I handle dealing with sick people all day. Would I be good at drawing blood? I'm not sure, but if I am I know where I'll be getting my scrubs!

My Horrendous Couch

We are currenly saving money to redecorate our living room. We've had this couch since the boys were little and you can see for yourself that it is horrific condition.

The back of this section is torn up and the seat is destroyed. The footrest is wired in place and can't be put down!

The next section has the back destroyed from the dog & cats.

Let me note that this is the room where the boys hang out and we have a lovely set of furniture on what we call our sunporch, which is our main room.

So now I have to start shopping for sectional couches. I found this one that I like.

I think this Candice Olson rug would look great in front of it.

Jack suggested this zebra wallpaper, but I don't know if I really have the nerve for that. I'm thinking about maybe 1 small accent wall, but it probably won't happen ;)

The last thing I would love to purchase is a lift top coffee table to complete the room.

This is going to take a lot of saving, but I enjoy looking and finding things that would work for me. What about you, do you ever window shop online?

My Review:

Well I could relate to Vicky. As a person who speaks their mind, sometimes to my own detriment, I can surely empathize with a teen who adults think have an attitude problem.

This book is touchingly real and up-front about the issues that confront teen girls today, and it will resonate with all of us who remembers our high school years.

Author Interview~
Mila, let’s start with your inspiration for The Attitude Girl, how long were the characters rumbling around in your head before you put them on paper?

I started the book when I was a student at the Institute of Children’s Literature. My assignment was to write three chapters, the beginning of the book, if I were to write one. I was inspired by my experience as an ex-teacher and the mother of an ex-teenager. I got an idea for a coming-of-age story about five teen girls, close friends. The characters were just popping up in my head. I created their personalities, imagined what they looked like, and named them. And then, I started to hear them speak. I knew what they were thinking and feeling. I lived and breathed along with them. It was like a movie playing in my head. Naturally, after the course was over, I just kept on writing. I couldn’t stop.

I think part of the reason that I loved this book so much was because of all of the real life trials and tribulations that Vicky and her friends had to go through. Was that your plan from the beginning?

I was writing a realistic contemporary story. So I tried to be as close to real life as possible. There are so many problems in the world today! My plan was to illustrate how teenagers deal with issues they have to face on the road to becoming adults such as bullying, first love, teen pregnancy, and relationships with parents. My goal was to deliver a message: life is not all black and white; it’s mostly grey, so deal with it! I wanted to make young adults and their parents understand that although it’s extremely hard to raise a child, being a teenager is not that easy, either.

Being that you are originally from Ukraine, you seemed to really have a grasp on American teens and their struggles, how did you get into their frame of mind so well?

I’ve been in the United States for many years. I watch TV and read. There are always news reports. I’ve heard stories from other parents about their kids being bullied. As I mentioned before, I infused many of my own traits into my protagonist. Some of her thoughts and questions are actually mine, and her authentic voice is often my own voice. And I’ll tell you a little secret: I’m awfully young at heart!

This book has won so many awards, which can only be attributed to your great writing, were you surprised that your first book did so well?

I’m very proud that my book won the total of 8 literary awards. Thanks! When my manuscript for The Attitude Girl won first place in the Arizona Authors Association Annual Literary Awards contest and a publishing contract with Five Star Publications as a prize, I was extremely surprised, even shocked – I couldn’t believe it! And when the novel was named a first-place winner in the Young Adult/Teenage category at the 2009 London Book Festival, I thought to myself, It must be good. They can’t be wrong twice, can they? Later, I received four Honorable Mentions in 2009/2010 literary competitions, and the book became a finalist of the 2010 National Indie Excellence Awards. And, finally, last September, The Attitude Girl was selected (I was told, unanimously) the Best Young Adult Novel of the Year at the 2010 Premier Book Awards. It’s overwhelming! But it’s a great feeling…

I didn’t feel like Vicky had such a terrible attitude problem, I could really relate to her honesty and outspokenness. Have you gotten a lot of feedback from girls who see themselves in these characters?

You are absolutely right! The problem with Vicky’s attitude is just that she doesn’t want to be or to think positive when she doesn’t feel like it. Considering Vicky’s honesty and outspokenness, it’s understandable where she’s coming from. Those are my own traits, infused into my main character. I, just like Vicky, always stand by my principals and fight for what I believe in.

Actually, I’m getting a lot of feedback from teen girls and moms. They say things like, “Finally, there’s someone who gets me!” or “It’s a book about me and many of my friends – same issues, same problems. Who doesn’t have attitude at this age? It’s like seeing myself in a mirror.” Moms identify with Vicky’s mother and start to understand young adults better. Many mothers and daughters read the novel together when they reviewed it, and they told me it was a great bonding experience. That means so much!

Is there a follow up to The Attitude Girl in the works?

I’m not planning a follow-up to The Attitude Girl. To be honest, I don’t believe in sequels – they usually are not as good as originals. But… you know… Never say never.

What new things do you have coming on the horizon?

I’ve been writing articles on parenthood and young adults. A couple of them were published in Power Women Magazine, MORE magazine, BOLD magazine, and the National Gallery of Writing. I’m a contributor to AuthorsDen.com, DivaToolBox.com and Weenc.com (Women Embracing Every New Challenge) – they publish my articles as well. I have several short stories for middle graders and young adults that need “polishing.” I started two books for kids ages 5 – 10, and I have a few ideas for books for adults that I have to develop.

Well I can't wait to see what comes next, thank you so much for taking the time to talk to me!

Today is John David's 19th birthday so here is a picture he chose, a post he wrote himself, with just a little commentary from me.

Hey everyone. My name is John David Hillman. On March 14th, 1992, I was born. Today, I turned 19. I would be spending the day in Canada drinking, (now that I'm legal to drink there), but I lost my passport, so I'll have to make due. ;) (John was born in Canada and is half Canadian himself.)

I live with my mom, and am putting off finding a job and doing college because I'm a lazy teenager. Lucky for my mom, right? (John doesn't mention that he already has a job lined up for the spring.)

I'm agnostic, bisexual, have a tattoo that says "Make love, not war" (the "O" in love is a heart, and the "O" in not is a peace sign) on my right arm, a gaged ear, and a pierced tongue. And yes, they ALL HURT! XD

I spend most of my time at my boyfriend Andy's apartment with his 2 roommates; 2 of my best friends. Other than the 4 of us here, we have 3 snakes, 2 cats, 4 rats (2 are mine. Mom wont let me bring them home... *pout*), and a mouse named "Dinner", because he will one day BE dinner for a snake.

So far for my birthday, I've gotten a good amount of money, a 2TB hard drive, and I bought myself 2 pet rats; Quorra (girl), and Phillip (boy) who I love with all my heart.

Thank you all for the well wishes and "happy birthdays", but make sure you send more to my mom. She puts up with me, so she needs support more than anyone. ;D

I Made It!

I'm happy to say that my dad & I arrived safely home yesterday afternoon, with no more troubles.

Your love, prayers, support and offers of help have meant the world to me. While my uncle lived far away, he was by far my favorite.

He called me Spoiled Brat, and because of his birthday, he was my April Fool. This was a long journey for my family and your continued prayers for my cousins and family are appreciated.

It will take some time to decompress from this trip, but I hope to be around to visit you all soon!

Stranded

Hello friends,

I am very sorry to say that my uncle passed away late Tuesday evening. We were able to say goodbye, but the loss is felt deeply.

On our way to Missouri, my dad's 2010 Acadia broke down & we had to leave it in a small town in Illinois, then take a loaner on to St. Louis. We are back in Illinois and our car is still not fixed, in fact they have not even received the part yet. I have no idea how it could possibly take a dealership almost a week to get a part for a one year old car. If the part comes in today then we should be able to leave tomorrow, otherwise it will be Monday at the earliest.

Sorry to be gone so long, I hope to be able to get home to my family as soon as possible. This trip has taken a lot out of my father and me emotionally, and the added stress of not being able to get home is not helping, as I'm sure you can imagine. I appreciate all of your love and support and hope to be back to my family and my blogging soon.

I had my social secutiry disability hearing today. It was very nerve-racking, but I think it went well, thank you for all of your prayers. Now we have to wast 3-6 months for a verdict. I didn't know it would take that long. But when we got home I had a "Box Of Faith" in the mail from artist Franck De Las Mercedes. He has an ongoing art project where you can request a handmade box from him. Mine came on my hearing day & it says it contains faith. What an amazing sign.

I was lucky enough to work with CSN Stores again and I got an amazing duvet cover. The Wildon Home 400 Thread Count Hem Stitch Solid Sateen Duvet Cover Set has exceeded my expectations in every way!

It's 400 thread count cotton sateen and it feels like heaven!

This is the detail around the duvet cover and the matching pillow shams that are included. The color I chose was Willow, & it's beautiful.

I'm happy to say that there are buttons on the bottom. I've had duvet covers with both snaps and velcro and both of those disappointed me. These buttons arent's huge and are nicely spaced across the bottom to keep your comforter securely in place.

I'm glad to report that it washes up well, which we need with a dog & 2 cats sleeping on our bed with us.

My husband has raved about this duvet cover since it arrived. I honestly both think we get a better nice sleep with this on our down comforter.

Oops, I almost forgot to mention the beautiful pillow shams that came with the duvet cover. An extra added bonus!

John David got me a giant blue monkey for my birthday last July. I walked in to find him placed here. Subtle, huh?

I returned to my psychiatrist after trying a different doctor for a while. It was great to see him & as I walked into his office he was just hanging up this calender. Sunflowers are my absolute favorite, so this seemed like such a great omen!

Wednesday

$644.00 worth of wisdom teeth that John David had removed. That's out of pocket and we have great insurance! I can't imagine what people do without insurance. He was really out of it for the first day, but he's doing great now.

Thursday

Oskar, King of all pillows within his reach. He worked hard to make that mound and spent his afternoon happily surveying his back yard from his perch.

Am I really that boring? Everyone in the room fell asleep. If you look you'll see 2 cats, 1 schnauzer and one exhausted husband.

Hello my name is Mimi and I'm participating in a the final year of the wonderful One World One Heart event hosted by the magical Lisa Swifka.

To tell you about me would be to tell you about my husband, my two teenage sons, my sassy dog Oskar, and my life with bi-polar disorder and a stomach condition called gastroparesis. Armed with Diet Pepsi & Xanax, I hope to take over the world if I can work out my social anxiety disorder!

Friends, you know my blog is all about honesty, which can be an emotional rollercoaster since I live with bi-polar disorder.

My medications were changed last week and it was a disaster, yesterday I changed back to Cymbalta and hope to go back to being my normal, only semi-crazy self.

Today for the first time in a week I found myself engaging with people and spontaneously smiling & it felt great. I was able to recognize the moment and hold on to it. Then I heard the song '100 Years' by Five For Fighting and it really made me stop. The lyrics at one point say "I'm 45 for a moment, the sea is high and I'm heading into a crisis, chasing the years of my life." Bazinga, that one spoke to me!

Really just a moment I have to enjoy life before that time is gone. So today I'm going to ignore the snow and hold onto the moment of my smile. Maybe I'll even have another one on the way.

On Sunday Chris decided to get out the Weber and make some chicken wings in the snow. I was visually pleased by the assortment of Buffalo Wild Wings sauces we have amassed. As any blogger mom knows my family moaned while they waited to eat and I had to line up the sauces for my 365 photo!

Sunday

My son Jack. He insisted that I take this picture and dared me to post it. Here you go Jack, lol!

Monday

Oskar enjoys the re-hydrated food he's sampling from The Honest Kitchen. It's used as a "topper" or suplement to his regular food. (I added pieces of chicken to the plate also)

Tuesday

Cookie dough. Cooking it is overrated.

Proof that there is some level of organization happening here!

11 degree weather & warm Diet Pepsi makes for a fun Oskar fountain.

Chris made us this pizza from scratch, damn it was good!

I'm going to be really honest here and tell you that with my gastroparesis I throw up a lot! This can cause leakage and these Stride Panties have been a lifesaver for me.

I also want to stress how comfortable these are. I cannot wear clothes that are not comfortable. If you show up to my house I will be in yoga pants & a sweatshirt. Stride Panties were comfortable all day long and did not in any way feel like I was wearing a "diaper".

My only hesitation with these is the size. I chose the XL panties & I'm a size 14. I would have liked a wee bit more cheek coverage. I wish that Stride would offer larger sizes to accommodate more women who are real sizes.

Time for my beloved Christmas quilt to be packed away. While part of me wants to use it all the time, another part likes that it's something to look forward to.

Sunday

Oskar re-arranged the garbage for me!

Monday

My mom-van ran out of gas in my neighborhood. Guess who didn't have their cell phone & had to trudge through the snow for a gas can!

Tuesday

A meeting with my Dr. to deal with my bi-polar & gastroparesis. We're adjusting my meds a bit so I've been a little tweaky this week. I'm hoping it will settle down by next week & so is my family, lol!

Wednesday

Here is a typical serving size when I eat. This was some turkey (about 2 oz.) and trimmings. I try to eat 3 times a day, but it doesn't always work out that way.

Thursday

My Hope corner. It's right next to my computer for a smile and some hope anytime I need it.

Friday

Oskar is unhappy with the Christmas quilt being gone, but you can see he's making due with the snowman quilt!

Sunday

Thoughts on Thinking Clearly! or My New Horoscope

OK, so a group of bored people got together and decided that the horoscopes needed to be changed. Who does that?

It's not like a group of people can just get together and decide that we now have one less planet or anything, right? OK, never mind that one.

With the new horoscope system I am supposedly changing from a Cancer to a Gemini. Here's what it says:

Cancer: June 22-July 22
Your previous qualities: the tenacity with which they protect their loved ones.

This is VERY true of me, always has been & always will be.

My new sign says this:
Gemini: June 21-July 20

Your new qualities: the ability to communicate effectively and think clearly.

Bwahahahah, A ha ha ha, that's a good one. Me, bipolar, anxiety suffering me, thinking clearly. I think that I'll stay as a Cancer thank you. I can't think clearly enough to remember my new sign.
